The Latest News from Debra Joy Groesser Fine Art "Capturing the Spirit" CELEBRATING 29 YEARS IN DOWNTOWN RALSTON _____ Heartland Plein Air Festival Award Winners - Invited Artists Heartland Plein Air Festival Award Winners - Invited Artists The Inaugural Heartland Plein Air Festival - a Successful Community Wide Celebration of Art Last week, a long time dream of mine for our community finally came to fruition. As many of you know, I've been heavily involved in organizing the inaugural Heartland Plein Air Festival, a national level event and the first of it's kind in our area. It was held from September 13th through 19th throughout Ralston and the greater Metro Omaha, Nebraska, area, with a youth paintout and art show on Saturday, September 12th. 22 nationally acclaimed master plein air painters from 18 states participated along with 22 local and regional artists in our "open division." We knew this event had the potential to bring our community together through art engagement for people of all ages, but we could never have imagined the response, the camaraderie between the artists, the smiles and the joy of the public as they watched artists painting places we love all over the Omaha metro area, Sarpy and Douglas counties. And the art that was created, in spite of the rainy weather...just fabulous. What a rich and exciting festival. What a strong beginning... The inaugural Heartland Plein Air Festival concluded Saturday with a quick-paint competition, a live public auction, and a public sale of works. We're still processing the impact on our Omaha-area neighborhoods, the creative districts that joined together to shape this event, the artists who contributed, the volunteers who gave so generously of their time and talents, the businesses and organizations we supported, and those who supported us. For one extraordinary week, 22 nationally-recognized invited artists and an additional 22 artists in the open division, many of them from our local creative districts, spread across the greater Omaha metro, setting up easels in parks, neighborhoods, streets, historic places, and public spaces. They painted the landscapes and cityscapes in front of them, imbued with the experiences and talents within them, creating lasting works of art in real time, in the public sphere. They painted through changing light, changing weather, curious passersby, and all the beautiful unpredictability that comes with making art outdoors. And then, on Saturday, we saw it all come together. People from all over came out to experience the exhibition, celebrate the artists, and see some of the places we pass every day through a wide variety of artists' eyes. Congratulations to all of our award winners, and congratulations to every artist who participated. The quality, variety, and sheer volume of work created during this first festival exceeded anything we could have hoped for. But the success of Heartland Plein Air was bigger than the paintings. It was artists demonstrating their processes in public. It was people showing up to witness this art being formed. It was conversations between artists and strangers. It was collectors discovering new artists and new works. It was children learning a new love of art through plein air painting with the artists. It was communities across Douglas and Sarpy Counties becoming subjects on the canvas. That is exactly what we hoped this festival could become. Thank you to our artists, volunteers, sponsors, host locations, educators, collectors, community partners, and everyone who came out to participate in this festival. Here are a few of Saturday's moments from an unforgettable first chapter of the Heartland Plein Air Festival. We'll see you next September."
